HIST 212L - Race in the US

3 Credit(s)

This course surveys the histories of multiple racialized peoples in the United States. For most of the human past, the world lived without “race” as a marker of difference. But, for all of U.S. history, race has been a reigning preoccupation. This course maps that story, and the struggles for justice it inspired. We will spotlight the cases of indigenous peoples in North America, Latinx peoples, and peoples of African, Asian, and European descent. In a fifteen-week course, we cannot claim to achieve comprehensive knowledge in such an expansive field of inquiry. Instead, we will aim for cultural and historical fluency as regards the multiplicities of “race” and resistance in the United States.
