ART 112N - Photography I: Digital

This introductory course explores photography as a means of creative expression, emphasizing both technical skills and artistic development. Students will learn manual camera settings and the three factors of exposure: ISO, shutter speed, and aperture. The course covers digital image creation and enhancement, including adjustments, tonal balance, and fine art printing using large-format photo plotters and professional-grade inkjet printers. Using Adobe software, students will explore image retouching and compositing techniques, as well as efficient digital workflows. Students will learn fundamental principles of photographic composition, such as framing, balance, and visual storytelling. Ongoing conceptual and compositional photo challenges encourage students to be creative and develop problem solving skills. Critiques and assignments will help develop a deeper understanding of photography, encouraging innovation and expanding creative possibilities. No prior experience is required.
