HIST 213l - America and the Second World War

This course examines the Second World War and its legacy in a political, economic, diplomatic, and cultural context. Topics include the origins of the war and the impact of the Great Depression on international relations; wartime diplomacy, economic policy and military strategy, as directed by Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin; the founding of the United Nations and the post-war Bretton Woods/IMF monetary system; and the creation of the NATO-led transatlantic alliance. The war’s impact on the colonial world, and the rise of globalization also falls under the purview of the course, as does the transformation of US foreign policy from traditional diplomacy to National Security Policy. Other aspects of the war, such as the Holocaust, resistance movements, the home front, and a variety of other topics, will also be examined.
