This course introduces students to the developing and changing field of queer studies. It focuses on the lives and contributions of queer people in cultural, historical, and social context, including identities such as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, intersex, asexual, pansexual and gender non-binary. As an interdisciplinary field, we will explore social constructions including but not limited to sexuality, race, class, ethnicity, religion, gender identity and gender expression. The course begins with the academic study of queer studies and queer theory, interrogating the stakes involved in that process while also addressing factors that create and maintain systems of oppression. This course seeks to connect personal experience and activism with contemporary social and political issues.
