ART 417N - Narrative: Experimental Photographic Animation

Students will be introduced to experimental photographic stop-motion and time-lapse techniques, using them as tools to explore storytelling and the manipulation of time. Through these techniques, students will experiment with freezing, compressing, and expanding time to create dynamic and thought-provoking visual compositions. This hands-on course covers the history, theory, and practice of animating photographs frame by frame and condensing long durations into captivating sequences. Technical skills, including manual camera controls and non-linear editing using Adobe software, will be emphasized alongside creative approaches to materials, lighting, and post-production. Students will explore various stop-motion animation methods and time-based techniques, learning to manipulate time through both traditional and experimental approaches. The course encourages students to develop their own creative methodologies for capturing motion and constructing engaging visual narratives. By the end of the course, students will have produced a one-to-two-minute composition that demonstrates their technical and creative understanding of time-based photographic techniques.
