Liberal Arts A study of mid-19th century American literature, approximately 1830-1860, highlighting the burst of artistic and intellectual creativity that culminated in the masterpieces of Poe, Emerson, Hawthorne, Thoreau, Melville, and Whitman. The influence of the Transcendentalist Movement on the literary, philosophical, social, and political climate of the period will be emphasized, including utopian and reformist efforts as well as the search for a national cultural identity. Writers to be studied, in addition to those named above, may include Fuller, Whittier, Bryant, Holmes, Longfellow, Douglass, Lowell, and Alcott.
