Liberal Arts This course will cover American literature from the Civil War to the early part of the twentieth century. It will examine the responses of American writers to the political, social, intellectual, religious, and economic upheaval following the Civil War. The course will explore the reactions to war, the emerging issues of industrialization and regional nostalgia, and the preoccupation with the “real,” imagined or otherwise, in the works of Twain, Howells, Chesnutt, Chopin, Dreiser, Crane, and Wharton, among others.
