Liberal Arts This course examines changing conceptions of masculinity in U.S. history. We will utilize scholarship in the field of gender studies to analyze what ‘manhood’ has meant and how its meanings have been influenced by race, class, sexual orientation, and ethnicity. Attention will be paid to the mutability of gender roles and expectations in the face of historical circumstances such as wars, industrialization, movements for women’s rights, and shifting family demographics.
