PHIL333L - Philosophy and Film

3 Credit(s)

Liberal Arts
Film is the dominant art form of our time and has become a fertile area for philosophical study. In this course, students will encounter some of the major problems in the philosophy of film, such as the nature of film and motion pictures, emotional and ethical involvement with film, and issues pertaining to various sub-genres of film like documentary, horror, and suspense. Readings, discussion, and a number of films screened in class will help students develop an enriched knowledge of metaphysics, epistemology, and value theory and serve as an effective way to sharpen critical vocabulary used in film theory and criticism. This course can be used to satisfy the Core Fine Arts requirement as well as requirements in the Cinema Studies Minor.

Offered When: Every two years or according to student and faculty interest.
Prerequisite(s): PHIL 101L
